my card

You are The Devil

Materiality. Material Force. Material temptation; sometimes obsession

The Devil is often a great card for business success; hard work and ambition.

Perhaps the most misunderstood of all the major arcana, the Devil is not really "Satan" at all, but Pan the half-goat nature god and/or Dionysius. These are gods of pleasure and abandon, of wild behavior and unbridled desires. This is a card about ambitions; it is also synonymous with temptation and addiction. On the flip side, however, the card can be a warning to someone who is too restrained, someone who never allows themselves to get passionate or messy or wild - or ambitious. This, too, is a form of enslavement. As a person, the Devil can stand for a man of money or erotic power, aggressive, controlling, or just persuasive. This is not to say a bad man, but certainly a powerful man who is hard to resist. The important thing is to remember that any chain is freely worn. In most cases, you are enslaved only because you allow it.

We changed our clocks for nothing?!

Turns out that time change March 11 didn't save any money at all.  In the words of my old roommate S, "good one."

test your movie music knowledge

Another great Mental Floss feature. They've had a couple of these.  I did poorly on the last one, but it was fun.  So click here and test your movie music knowledge.

good line? and a recipe

I had to get a suture.  I was laughing so hard I actually bust a gut. (said in dead pan tone)

I made some halibut last night and it was fantastic, lemon and dill.  I also made pizza bread.  It turned out very well (it's been several years since I've made it) and it's crazy easy.  Follow along now.

Crazy Delicious, Super Easy Pizza Bread

1 package instant yeast (I think it's a tsp. but I don't know.  I just buy the three packs)
3/4 warm water
2 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt (i like kosher salt)
1 1/2 - 2 cups flour
2 tbsp. melted butter
Parmesan cheese
Italian Seasoning (the club house version is quite good)
Seasoning salt

Preheat oven to 425 F.

Measure out water in a medium sized bowl. Sprinkle yeast on top of water.  Add sugar.  Stir with a spoon until yeast is dissolved. Throw in the salt and stir a little. Add flour slowing and continue to stir. I don't know how much flour you'll need really because you just keep adding till you can't stir any more, then you keep on adding flour while kneading by hand until it's no longer sticky.

Roll it out onto a greased cookie sheet (pizza pan, whatever). You can toss it too but it takes more time unless you're really good at it; we want pizza now.

Brush butter (oil, melted margarine) on it. Sprinkle some cheese, Italian seasoning, and seasoning salt.  Sprinkle whatever you want really.

Bake 10-15 (until bottom is brown).

Come back and comment on the recipe and if it worked for you or not and what changes made it even better.

I think that's it.  Have fun!

Making you smarter

I have said it before and I'm saying it again. Mental floss is great.  Here's a article about Shakespeare that I found rather amusing.

tired and lagging thoughts...

  • I'm tired and lagging, though I've been going to bed early
  • I need to get more excercise.
  • how did SAIT get my address?
    • how does anyone get my address when they say they won't share it?
  • Family comes on the weekend and I'm making a cake; damn it.
  • I declined a job before it was offered
  • thinking about thinking makes me think about drinking
    • and other rhymes
    • not the Leanne variety
  • Page a day calendars give me something to look forward to
  • Trust, trust is earned.

Now time for a haiku.
there it waits, sits, holds
until the time I break in
patiently alone

roll up the rim is back

I love coffee and in particular I love Tim Hortons. For those Americans who don't have access to one or haven't been; it's fantastic. For 21 years Canadians have been rolling up the rims of their cups to win. I think it's a little ridiculous that an Ice Cap, which costs a lot more, doesn't give you the opportunity to win a car, cash, a tv, an iPod, or another coffee. Whatever though, rules are rules. I thought I'd take a look at the rule which, thanks to the wonder of the Internet, can be found here, then click on rules and regulations and follow the links.

I've always wondered what it means by no purchase necessary so I thought I'd read up on what that meant. Rule 2 tells me:
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO PLAY: In Canada, obtain a FREE Tim Hortons contest cup and/or a copy of the official rules, by writing to: Tim Hortons Contest Cup, P.O. Box 9296, Saint John, New Brunswick, E2L 4Y8. In U.S.A., to receive a FREE contest cup and/or a copy of the official rules write to: Tim Hortons Contest Cup, Box 1315, Calais, Maine, 04619-6315. All requests for a Free Cup must be postmarked by May 5, 2007 and received by May 13, 2007. Limit one request per envelope with sufficient postage, while supplies last. Void in Florida and where prohibited by law. No mechanical reproductions of requests permitted. All requests must include a postage-paid, self-addressed envelope.
So there you have it. No purchase is necessary but it'll cost you the price of postage (which isn't listed) and is likely around the price of a cup of coffee. No purchase necessary doesn't necessarily mean free. Those are my observation's for today.

Well, it's no Diefenbunker

I'm really digging the mental floss blog. I love trivia and fact and that what's for dinner over at mental floss.  I read this today on the floss and it got me excited all over again for the Diefenbunker.  Way back last summer we visited the bunker which I wrote about on our Crossing Canada Blog .  Here's an excerpt:

The Diefenbunker is the nickname given to a cold war bunker built from 58-61 in Carp Ontario (while under the administration of Prime Minister Diefenbaker). I loved the two tour. The building, capable of withstanding a proximity nuclear blast, finally closed in 1994 and was a military installation till that point. There were 25 chefs on staff from 61-93. The four floors had everything needed for 500 people to stay alive for 30 days, and ensure the continuation of the government. The most interesting thing to me was that Diefenbaker said he would never use it as his wife would have to be left behind; he simply approved the 20-30 million dollar project as recommended by the Department of Defense. Once the building was closed (which is only a tiny shed on the outside) the army stripped the bunker and sold it a few years later for 3 dollars. The foundation that now owns it is trying to re-create all the rooms to their original for this cold war museum. It was a unique piece of Canadiana that was worth seeing.

There's something strange and mysterious about bomb shelters and bunkers and the Congressional Bunker is no different. They excite me in the same way that secret passages in castles do.  I would one day like a secret room behind a book shelf.  Friends of mine are moving into a new condo/loft and I think they should make a hidden room; possibly a hidden bedroom.  Of course people would say, "where do you sleep," but it's great because they could answer "we don't."  People who don't sleep make those of us who do jealous, and visa versa.  When I hear that Martha Stewart only sleeps 5 hours a night I think, damn her!

Garage band 06' came out over a year ago and I finally really used it for the last time last night. It's a riot.  It's good to have a project, though it's rather daunting when lovers got a degree in composition.  Oh well, I'll just have fun I guess; and make it big because of my connection to JT.

Lastly.  We got curtains at JYSK for the living room and it looks amazing.  Now I've decided to do the bedroom.  Thing is. curtains are expensive.  What have I done?  Walmart discount bin.  $1.97 per meter. Wow. I have bought 9 meters of fabric (which is way!!! too much) and I'll do that tonight.  I have also bought four cushins ($5 each at Ikea) and more discount fabric; I'll make the covers myself.  I'll take pictures when it's all said and done.

observations

While watching paint your wagon the gruffer second husband (opposite Clint Eastwood) says, "If you wanna keep your manhood you'd better stop trying to beat three aces with a pair of fours." Common sense perhaps but perhaps it's sage advice. I don't know why it stuck a cord. It just did. TCMC is showcasing movies with Academy Award winning scores. You get to see the movies that you've only heard of and that most movie rental places don't carry. Hell, the only place that you'll see half the titles they're showing is in the 6.99 in SinMart. Tonight at 9:00 is An American in Paris.

I like Swiffer. Though it's really quite wasteful at least their commercials show people, real people (actors to be fair, but not CGI ones). Today I saw a commercial for Scrubbing Bubbles Fresh Brush Max. First let me talk about the ridiculous name; who's talking around the water cooler about cleaning their toilet with their amazing Fresh Brush Max? It sounds like a tooth brush that doesn't require toothpaste. Anyhow, the commercial is all animated and features these scrubbing bubbles and describes how it was developed by scrubologists. Where are the people, the people cleaning real toilets? It's wasteful and stupid. My toilet brush works just fine. It seems like just another thing to have to worry about buying. On the other hand electrasol tabs are fantastic and one of the reasons we live in the apartment we do is because of the dishwasher. Modern convenience verses headache; that's my thesis.

been thinking lately

random thoughts;

  • I'll never have enough money if I keep on spending more then I should.
  • Martini's are a quick easy drink to make.  1, or less, part vermouth, 2 parts gin, or vodka. I'm going to buy Gordon's next time as it's what the Queen drinks and I want to feel regal.
  • I'm excited about Ellen and the Oscars.  Almost as excited as when Steve Martin hosted.
  • I would like to go back to the school but only to have a different schedule for a while.
  • It'd be nice if all resumes sent out would be responded to. Even if to say no.
  • using anger to control a relationship is destructive to all parties.  I'm working on it.
  • 1 month 28 days. so far so good.
  • 2 months less 6 days. even better.
  • I'm enjoying cooking more then ever.  it's fun to have someone to cook for.  I have been challenging myself in the kitchen but need to step it up even more.  Try cooking penne and then tossing it in ground up croutons (garlic herb for example) and chopped roasted almonds and olive oil.
  • spring is coming soon.
  • 300 looks like a good movie
  • i'm a man and statistically I haven't been blogging because I'm a man (look at previous posts).
  • just when I want to chop all my hair off it looks good for a day (known as a good hair day) and then I want to keep it.
  • 24 is simply addictive
  • heroes is addictive.  i hate how networks stretch out a show when it's ratings are good.  Heroes has been suffering from this a little and I hear that Lost is really suffering from this.  I'm glad Seinfeld quit when he did; in his prime.  Alias on the other hand killed me. Worst still the last couple seasons of the X Files.
  • google reader and gmail are stunning.  time to play catch up apple.  I love the new pop access function of gmail.  Now I run two programs on my computer all the time.  Firefox and iTunes.  Gone are NetNewsWire and Entourage.
  • yousendit.com to send large files
  • hey babe, take a walk on the wild side.

Open letter BNL.

An open letter to the Barenaked Ladies:

I just heard about the Proposed Private Copying Tariff 2008-2009 by the Canadian Private Copying Collective. Read all about the insanity here. Somewhat applauded that my iPod could go up in price by $75 and that I would be supporting Canadian artists by buying camera supplies (flash cards are included in the proposal). I phoned CPCC to get more information. I was told that it should cost money to backup my paid for library because I'm copying at home. That I should be charged not only money spent on your album from iTunes but also to copy it to my iPod if for no other reason then to backup my paid for music; regardless I'm paying twice. She said that it wasn't to recover costs from pirating (somehow that'd be better in my opinion). I mentioned the Barenaked Ladies and the Canadian Music Creators Coaltions (CMCC), and what they're doing to support fans and keep them. She said that BNL and the CMCC support this proposal. Aghast and surprised I look to you for an explanation. Do you support this and if so why? There might be something I'm missing and I'd love to get your feedback.

There you have it;
